Symbols Greenwoods……(1 / 2)

The Greenwood

"The greenwood" is a forest in full leaf. The term evokes the setting for English tales about outlaws, like Robin Hood, living in the woods. In Maurice the greenwood symbolizes a place far from society where gay men can live freely as "outlaws." For most of the novel, Maurice is convinced no possibility exists for gay men to be together. To him "the greenwood" emphasizes the imaginary nature of the place or its existence in the distant pass. Despondent about Clive's decision to marry, Maurice tells himself he is different from other people. "An outlaw in disguise," Maurice thinks, invoking the legendary outlaw resident of the greenwood. He wonders whether, "among the men who took the greenwood in the old time," there was a pair of men: "two men like himself—two." But Maurice is so heartbroken about Clive's marriage he isn't sure such a pair ever existed, even in the greenwood. Later, contemplating Alec Scudder's love, but still feeling pessimistic, Maurice tells himself not to look "towards Sherwood," the woods where Robin Hood and his band lived. The symbol recurs when in Part 4, Terminal Note, when Forster remarks, "Maurice and Alec still roam the greenwood."

Windows

In two key moments of Maurice, lovers are united when one enters the other's bedroom through the window. When Clive utters Maurice's name aloud, Maurice appears at his window and enters. Later, when Maurice utters the ambiguous invitation, "Come!," Alec Scudder enters his bedroom window. The open window at night symbolizes secrecy and transgression. If the lovers didn't dread the restrictions of the social order, they could use the door instead.

The open window also symbolizes one lover sexually yielding to the other. But with Clive and Maurice, this part of their union remains symbolic. They kiss, but Maurice returns to his room. Later Clive refuses even a kiss from Maurice, though he still says he loves him. With Alec, however, the open window does coincide with a sexual union.
