Motorcycle and Sidecar
In Maurice, the motorcycle and its sidecar symbolize the unity of two male lovers. In Part 2, Chapter 13, Maurice and Clive ride into the countryside, with Maurice piloting the motorcycle and Clive riding in the sidecar. Later, after Maurice's initial rejection of Clive, Clive thinks longingly of the ride as a time when he and Maurice "realized the unity preached by Plato." Clive is referring to the Symposium, a philosophical dialogue about love, by the ancient Greek philosopher Plato. In that dialogue, Socrates says that love unites the soul with its missing half, another soul. Because Socrates also discussed his own love for a young man, Alcibiades, the dialogue becomes Clive's way of declaring his love to Maurice. The Symposium is partly about erotic love, but also about love of wisdom. The two parts of the vehicle in Maurice—motorcycle and sidecar—symbolize both two fused bodies and two fused souls.
The fate of the motorcycle and sidecar also parallels what happens to Clive's and Maurice's relationship. Setting out in the motorcycle on their day in the countryside, the two men are "bound in a single motion," a phrase suggestive of sex. But Clive rejects the physical aspect of his love for Maurice, preferring to care for Maurice "in the real sense," idealized and nonphysical. Likewise, the motorcycle breaks down during their picnic, and they abandon it, just as they abandon the attempt at physical union.
